Well, ignoring that this all presumes that self-awareness is a form of representation by the brain, studies suggest the difficulty lies in not having a model of the mental side of self-awareness that is as well developed as its model of the physical side of selfhood, leading to errors of prediction. Not all this argle bargle about time. I'm pretty sure this disparity is replicated across the entire spectrum of self-awareness due to the physical self being something that can be perceived, whereas the part of self responsible for behavior not being likewise observable.

I think the concept of soul would likely arise only if there is a sense the self will persist even if the body doesn’t.  that requires tendency towards looking ahead and planning well in advance.

fine.  I don’t know my model is accurate.   but I think it is original and it explains the observations.  it is also relatively simple and concrete.  so I think it is worth putting forward to be fleshed out to be a testable or working hypothesis.
