Sounds like an undercount to me, and why start at 9/11 - american bullets were killing people long before that. As it turns out, though, some number of those bullets were fired by gay servicemembers. I've met some pretty high speed gay infantry - and would you believe it, they're no more or less bothered by the fact that american rounds kill than a straight infantryman would be. It's a source of pride, something we all truly bond over...actually.
I suppose it's more than a little bit theatrical, really. It's not so much hooah hooah rushing pillboxes anymore as it is peacekeeping and infrastructure projects. As a groundpounder, there's no rational expectation that you'll match a pilots enemy kia. More than anything, that transition from a culture of warlike heroism to by-the-numbers professionalism helped move the military along the path to the kind of acceptance you might find in a white collar environment. It's not about the manly man kicking ass and taking names anymore, and all the shit that went with that.
