I know that a lot of Christians just think of prayer as asking God for stuff.
If you read the better Christian writers (Kierkegaard, for example) you'll find that most see prayer as a way to work on yourself. The idea is to get yourself more in line with the goodness that God has in mind already.
So if the boxer asks God to win the match for him, and then doesn't train, the prayer is worthless. But if he uses the prayer as a mental and spiritual exercise to give himself strength and concentration, it may help.
