Because, going back to Plato, mathematics has been used to make the claim that things can exist that we cannot demonstrate via our senses. Extending that line of thought leads to the idea that there are 'perfect' entities that can exist in ways that cannot be detected except via the intellect.
Some theists use this line of thought to support their belief in deities.
One Platonic dialog has Socrates supporting the notion that we never learn anything. Instead, we 'remember' what we have forgotten when we were born.
The dialog used a slave and a math problem to justify the line of reasoning.
