In 456 BCE, Persians attacked Corinth. In order to keep the element of surprise, they killed 49 of the city’s 50 patrol dogs. A dog called Soter escaped and warned the Corinthians, who were able to fight off the Persian attack. The grateful citizens erected a statue and awarded the dog a silver collar.
(‘Soter’ was probably either an honorific or the name given to the dog after the event, as it is also the personification of ‘deliverance from harm’ in Greek mythology.)
