In response to the title of this thread, I don't see why not? Of course, it also depends on what you mean by "universe". There are more than one way of defining that term.
As for the OP, the Kalam Cosmological Argument (which it implicitly refers to) is not a compelling argument. The premise "the universe began to exist" is very well-contested, and relies on a particular view of time which is controversial.
