This is one of those times where the banality of russian propaganda could bite them in the ass. If a tsunami hit the arctic coast they'd say it was a ukranian plot..but putin has kept his support (such as it is) for this war by going out of his way to shield the residents of moscow and st pete from the consequences of his admins decisions in ukraine. Insisting that...actually..."ukranians" can attack them anywhere at any time runs counter to their messaging for these past many years.
Cynically, we might propose that The Master Strategist is running a play out of George the Youngers book, but this didn't end well for Junior, with the right and left wing of american politics becoming deeply critical of the wars in iraq and afghanistan. Mostly, for reasons of "these people are a fucking joke" - which despite the differences between the us and russias domestic and political situations, seems to be about the worse thing for any authoritarian regime that wishes to stay in power or expand that power. It ended with a successful internal coup here which, in turn, produced a failed autocoup.
