Because we have gone from tribes of savages operating on base emotions to civilizations with concepts like human rights, advanced concepts of morality and transcending our base instincts in favor of logic and reason.
But now, we seem to be on the cusp of taking many giant steps backwards into savagery and ignorance.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
