Remember when we thought Bush was bad?
George W. Bush came on the heels of a similar conservative lunatic-populist, Newt Gingrich, who sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act, which strictly defined marriage as the union of a man and a woman and denounced gays, feminists, and liberals as the enemies of "real America"--among other things. But he crashed and burned, especially since he spent much of his time on chastising Clinton for his extramarital transgressions while having an affair at the same time.
So George W. Bush practiced "compassionate conservatism" and even championed an immigration bill so moderate he couldn’t muster enough Republican support to pass it. But he also practiced typical Republican economic policy: tax cuts; which tanked the economy.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
