This is a great point. 

There should surely be outward signs, if a person is on a good path. And humility, kindness, things like that are surely essential.

There is the humility born of the experience of being a limited human being. That verges on embarrassment.

There is also the demand that others exercise humility toward some object of arbitrary authority (religious, political, literary, or whatever). That is arrogance by other means.
