The idea that they had no questions because they thought they were subhuman is a stretch. The church thought they were suitable for conversion, so there's an obvious inconsistency in writing them off as subhuman.
I think we're all familiar with the phenomenon of a society doing a thing..and especially to "other people" that the same society views as immoral. It's probably more useful to view a societies moral beliefs through the lens of what is and is not permissible ingroup. To wit, during the time period in question, the church banned christians from enslaving christians and the penalty for doing so was excommunication.
OFC, they looked all kinds of other ways about this. It was more convenient for their political situation. They knew better, they also knew they wanted money and power...and so it is that the head shaman of todays church of timeless morals turns into a moral relativist rather than acknowledge as much dryly and without prevarication. It's still too hot.....
