Funny - I’ve always viewed that verse as acquiescing to a state of personal slavery.

Well it lies within the new covenant rulings.
Going by
Jeremiah 31:31-34
2 Corinthians 3:6
Where it talks about Letter of the law (Literally) vs spirit of the law (What Christians are to follow. Which means to go by the intentions rather than literally). One example is when they ask Jesus about food laws. Where his response to that, is its the behavior that matters and can get you condemned, not the literal food. So he uses the argument of what comes out of a person, not what goes inside a person.
Mark 7:19
Or going by Paul`s example of Loving your neighbor
Galatians 5:14
Romans 13:9
Or in a cliche way to put it. Love. Without love, you cant be a Christian.
Though the Love to God comes first, and then that love is transferred to your neighbor. (Just so i dont get accused of lying)
(Bold mine)
All evidence to the contrary.
