I think most Christians in this country support a general recognition of God in government, either out of tradition or falsely believing the "Christian nation" nonsense spewed from the dominionists. They may support religious politicians, but they don't want the government telling them they have to go to church, can't use contraceptives, or have an abortion. But what they don't seem to understand is that once you open the door to religion being recognized by government, you open the door to letting other people's religious beliefs rule your life. Add to this a misunderstanding of the Establishment Clause (some actually believe that it means the government can't favor one denomination of Christianity over another) along with the "majority rules, sit down and shut up!" attitude they seem to have whenever atheists assert their right to not have religion forced upon them, and it allows people like Santorum & Bachman to have a legitimate shot at the presidency.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.
