Actually, I don't think he did - and he was stating an opinion, but it's the same one that I hold at the heart of it - its your personal choice whether or not you're going to follow "foolishness," but it doesn't make you crazy or stupid.

My father is highly intelligent, but his belief in organic woo doesn't make him crazy or stupid by any means.
Honestly, I think a better OP question would have been "why do certain fundamentalist groups continue to enforce purposeful ignorance?"
