Surely you jest? There is a smaller selection of "kinds" today than there would have been "back then". Also, what makes you think that "no animal back then is alive today"...here we are, just for the very first example, and I could name dozens more just to embarrass the shit out of you. What's the big idea, is evolution happening or not? You people can never seem to decide that for yourselves. No specific number is given because the author had no fucking clue, but notice that kangaroos were not mentioned. No idea why that would be.
