Carl Sagan, like Albert Einstein was intellectually dishonest about his personal beliefs and was afraid to admit to his peers that he was a non-believer, possibly of fear of ridicule or social pressure from idiots like you. His widowed wife pretty much put that debate to rest a long time ago when she admitted her late husband didn't believe in god, thereby making him, you guessed it, an atheist.
