Im starting to think that the "nature of man" is a fortress whereby one can assert just about anything. It's not entirely you, it's been cropping up alot. I see it written alot, but I never see it elaborated upon, and I always wonder why things that are part of the "nature of man" like our contradictory tendencies don't get included into these rights, if it;s so important that these rights be based upon whatever our nature is. I demand contradictory rights as part of my nature! (I also demand that you refuse me those rights.)
Just why do you think that it isn't in the nature of man to enslave our fellow man? If our history is to be of any use to us in this endeavor then I can confidently say that "the nature of man" isn't something I'd turn to when sourcing authority for rights, or arguing why any given right is a good idea, at least not if I had an alternative. Keep in mind that I'm a huge fan of man...lol. The thing I've noticed about the whole "nature of man" bit is that everything that follows is very much aligned with whatever personal value judgements the speaker is likely to have about our nature. The nature of man, and all the rights they would advocate for, follow from what they perceive to be the good shit in the nature of man. Well, who gives a shit what you perceive to be the good shit? Speaking of our contradictory natures (or at least mine), you know one of my favorite things about "our nature"? Our capacity and propensity for violence. It also happens to be one of my least favorite parts of our nature. Go figure. Can we get some rights set up like the "right to gratuitous violence for it's own sake, every third tuesday"?

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
