The reason you wasted your time talking to yourself in hopes of not wanting others to suffer is simple. EVOLUTION produces compassion and there is no human that cannot or does not exhibit that to some degree to those around them.
We as a species do that most with that which we are close to much more than that which is not close to us. We have a tendency to give more compassion to that which we are familiar with than those far away from us.
It is not weird at all. I don't care what label or what political part or what nation someone comes from, the individual will at a minimum, look at an "injustice" and not want harm to come to another human, whatever the reason. The problem with that is that we have not learned to see ourselves as the same species, and as long as labels take priority over knowledge of evolution, our species will exhibit compassion at a much greater bias degree.
