If you are already dwelling in materialism (and therefore separated from the Truth of God), a demon has no need to show himself to you. There have been plenty of documentations of spiritual encounters--exorcisms and the like. Most happen to people who are already aware of the spiritual realm. Satan has his goals, just as God does. If revealing their existence will not help win you to their side, they will remain in the background. Satan is most dangerous when you don't know he's there.
