Does it really matter whether he was guilty or innocent? They basically tortured him to death.
In what way would the confirmation of either make this better? Whatever crimes he may or may not have committed we do not have proof for. They evidently extracted his desperate confessions through inquisition like methods.
The only crime we do have proof for is that under the states supervision and approval a human being was systematically tortured and broken till he lost the will to live.
It is a crime the state should be held accountable for.
