As with most words, there are a number of definitions, but the most common one in everyday discussion, and the one I am using is:

Basically something that doesn't have any special/specific characteristics. For exapmle, if you say that you don't follow any particular religion and just worship 'god', for whom the only qualification is omnipotence, then it could be said to be a generic god. If you said that your god had a particular set of characteristics, then you could probably find an existing god to match it. Generic also means something that is not a brand name product.
