My only suggestion would be talking, catching up with him.
Perhaps, if he's out of the military for a while, you can get him to smoke some weed and learn to let go of the assholes of life. If not, don't even bother considering anything other than alcohol (which does little to mellow most people out, unfortunately).
Given the passive-aggressive fucks I knew at college, he'll find it extremely trying not to beat the living shit out of some people (of which doing such earns a probably expulsion).
There are also veterans groups. They might allow, in some mentoring or group counseling capacity, better return to civilian life.
