Unfortunately, this usually leads to the 'free will' cop out. It goes something to the effect of "if you choose not to cure AIDS, then you indirectly are responsible for anyone who dies of it and you can't blame god for the suffering in the world" even though god chooses not to cure it as well. This usually leads to "god gave us reign of the world so he lets us have free will and do what we will with the earth" except, of course, for when he interferes wildly, like in the OT.
The real problem is the god created evil in humans. It was a rigged game from the start: god gave us 'free will' and then stacked the deck so we would choose in a way that he could punish us for. God knew we would fail, but he didn't simply let it happen, he made it impossible to not happen by deliberately pre-programming faulty morals into Adam and Eve.
