Well, we technically don't know if it was an apple or not, but the point stands. God said not to eat it, and told them they would die if they did. God did not give them the ability to distinguish right from wrong, so they could only possibly work out things in a pragmatic sense. Once the snake removed any pragmatic reason to not eat the fruit, Adam and Eve would have no reason not to eat it. However, it wasn't an ordinary fruit; it was the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. This point is used to try to make their actions look worse, when in fact it abstains them from guilt. The fact that they did not even know what good and evil were before means they could not possibly know right from wrong before eating it. Why didn't god let them know right from wrong until it was too late? He was stacking the deck.
