Hmm, well I don't believe in free will so when people encounter each other they are going to respond in a pre-programmed way. So, while you might be successfully suppressing things about yourself, you ARE expressing certain things about yourself and, as JonB suggested, it can be very off-putting to meet someone who is hiding things.

I spent years trying to "not be myself" I found that it wasn't helpful because whenever I made a change that made some happy others were not happy. It really is best to just try to be the most genuine person that you can be.
