Well they certainly ended the war in the pacific. I wasn't aware that anyone historically disputed this. Much less thought that Russia had anything to do with the Japanese surrender.

Aside from a border war against the Japanese in Manchuria in the late 1930's which lasted only a few months, the Russians didn't battle them in the Pacific on a scale that the U.S. and the Brits did...It was only after the war in Europe had ended did the Russians start an invasion into Japan...by that time the Japanese army and navy had already been pretty much weakened by the U.S.
