And another thing, also quite important:
Sooner or later, America will unfortunately fall from its status as a superpower. It happens to all empires just as surely as death happens to every person. We'll never be invaded, I don't mean that, but our economic and political influence will one day recede.
When we realize we're going to die, a mature person thinks about what legacy they will leave behind. How did they touch the lives of those around them? Will they be respected for their contributions or reviled for the pain they inflicted?
When America's turn at bat is over, what will our legacy be? Will we be the obnoxious prick who screamed "We're #1" all the way down? Who preached the right and did the wrong? Who spoke of freedom and advocated unlawful detention and torture? Who said "international law for thee but not for me"?
Or will we be a nation respected for living up to its ideals of liberty and constitutional law? Will we be the nation that helped bring the world together, not under an empire but under mutual international law, starting with Wilson's vision of a League of Nations to the UN today?
What would you like our legacy to be?
