Blind adherence to authority? If that's what someone taught you growing up, then that person had no notion of what a democracy is all about. The obedience people are supposed to give in service to the government is part of a social contract between the government and the people it governs that certain services detailed in a physical or unwritten constitution will be provided unto the people, such as protection from domestic and foreign aggression, maintenance of the infrastructure of society, provision of mediation in civil disputes, etc.
On the other hand we have the right to complain, protest, and in some cases overthrow our government if we feel it is not living up to its obligations, and it is able to arrest us if we don't fulfill ours.
