Because we like stories. 
Even in science, we like stories. Cold hard data might be real, but it's easier to digest as a story.
The thing that religion still has over science that people find more comforting is the idea that we matter. That we're important, in some way. This is a fundamentally human need. To many of the religious, science only tells us that we are a part of a cold, unforgiving universe - tiny sparks that die too soon with seemingly no effect. That's why I'm such a proponent of Neil deGrasse Tyson, who took up Sagan's torch in showing us how beautiful science is, and describing to us how intrinsic, even if ephemeral, we are to...everything. Many of the religious and spiritual say that we are all "one in god" or that we're all connected through a force...The Force...whatever. And Neil goes and says basically that they're wrong, but they're right:

"We are star stuff."
That is the profound message we should be giving people to comfort them. It's real, and it gives you the right to inherit not just the Earth or some made-up kingdom of God, but the universe itself.
