A discussion relies upon the assumption that we are all on the same page. It doesn't work well to discuss page 50 with someone who hasn't reached page 5... at least until they know what happens on page 50. Sometimes we are both reading page 50... but out of different books. That is why we need to agree on definitions before we can discuss them.
Without a base upon which to discuss: there can be no discussion.
