It's different, for millennia we've always had some sort of deity to guide us and to explain things. In our history as a species atheism is young and different from the old norms so people aren't really open to accepting it yet.
Take a look at segregation policies in the U.S, when the segregation ended in the states people weren't very open to it and fought against it. Now the segregation is frowned upon in society today.
I think given time Atheism will be accepted (or moreso) then it now, and people won't hate it.
