It comes from responding to the spiritual light of the Lord. People and cultures that have not been exposed to the Gospel message are not damned. The Lord's mercy credits them with their acceptance of and faithfulness to the truths to which they have been exposed. Since truth only comes by means of our Lord, the heathens are in one sense, receiving Christ, even if they are not fully aware of the ultimate source.
