Lets define lave as altruism, the action of doing something for someone else at your own cost.
Killing myself? People do it for the sake of other people, which is altruism: love.
Animals simply cannot decide whether or not to leave their mates or their children if that is what their species does. If they did, it would only be because their own lives are in even greater danger. Humans can do that because we simply don't want to take care of a family, or we have something to do that will benefit more people e.g. joining the military, in the case of a just cause.
I can decide not to help my parents or my wife. That would be ingratitude, which animals cannot exhibit. I can also decide to feed a complete stranger. Altruism.
The Earth revolves around the Sun. People who didn't believe this said God did it. When we found out he didn't, that did not undermine his existence. We don't worship God out of the fear that the Earth would stop turning.
If religion was entirely primitive, it would make people comfortable. But religion says that we should give to the poor and love the people who try to kill us.
Animals don't have human rights because they can't think like we do. Because people can think, we have religion, morals, and science. These things, among many others, make us human. Which is why only humans get rights.
