I've been online debating Christians for close to a decade on various forums. And during that time I would estimate that I've spent a cummulative 10 full minutes altogether sitting here in stunned silence realizing at last that what some Christian just said, which I originally thought was a joke, was actually seriously stated by one of them.

Something that a protestant christian said.

I'm a former Southern Baptist. So I'm not that far removed.

But there have been a few times when a christian posted something that I took as jest. Something I chuckled at and thought, "That's cool. They're at least attempting to bring a little light hearted levity to the discussion."

And then another atheist would say in the atheist only section something like, "I can't believe this shit."

I would pipe up, "Get a sense of humor, that was a joke."

And then a third member who was also a former christian would say, "Uhm no. My former congregation taught that."

And I would sit here in stunned silence for half a minute or so.

One guy at one atheist forum site even came up with a definition about religion is that to a certain percentage of people it's indistinguishable from parody.
