In fairness, I already expect that there can be no good answer because the concept of blood sacrifice is based on primitive, barbaric notions of atonement. For whatever reason, it seemed a common theme among religions all over the world that the gods need blood to be spilled on their altars. In some cultures, it was animal blood. In a few, it was human blood. No one ever seemed to question why.
Today, we should.
The answers I've gotten in the past are to ramble on about how "the blood of Christ was necessary for atonement. Without his precious blood, there could be no redemption, yatta yatta." Yeah, I know the sermon. I didn't ask for that. I want to know *WHY* it works, not your assertions that it works. What are the mechanics? What's the cause and effect?
The absurdity only escalates when you consider that Jesus is supposed to be the same god. So he's sacrificing himself to himself as the only means to convince himself.
The other answer I expect is the "Lord works in mysterious ways" quip.
