Why?

People found that giving something they prized felt like they were redressing a balance. Far better to be charitable than throw it away, but they thought payment to god/s weren't to be made to any man. Debt is owed to the debtor. Personal debts of imperfection are owed to whatever is perceived as perfect.
We strive to overcome our imperfection.
Some philosophies suggest we should learn to be happy with our imperfection. This is a model of an unjust world where there is reduced reason to act fairly. It's easy to see how humans thought sacrifice a better model.
So, people used sacrificing something valuable to them as some sort of self-punishment over the guilt they feel?
I've got an idea. How about dealing with imperfection by trying to truly understand why and how we are imperfect and coming up with solutions to lessen the impact of those imperfections?
But no, the better idea is to just spill some blood and say, "all is forgiven."
