You missed off "symbolically" faith.
People do it all the time (make sacrifices). it's kinda a human thing. There's a reason for that.
Yeah I think I covered the practical alternative angle. I even credited it in your favour. I don't think we have trumped the theological angle yet. I don't see it as possible. We already have a perfect solution. That isn't to say we might not find better.
Self punishment... yes indeed.
Absolutely I think we're duty bound to try and resolve our problems. To defer to God would be anti God IMO.
