The most original moral teaching in the NT was the requirement to turn the other cheek. It isn't always wise, but it does make a statement. And it's not always unwise. It's hard for a person with empathy to beat up on a person who just takes it willingly without retaliating, who returns an attack with kindness. It's very disarming. And it's very difficult. It goes against our instincts. I understand why Christians have trouble doing this. I don't understand why it's so hard to find one that even gives it a sincere try. The closest I've seen is returning an attack with passive-aggressiveness, which completely misses the point. I imagine Quakers try, but how likely are you to run into a Quaker online if you're not looking for them?
