From the perspective of America, this is the worst possible outcome.

I suppose that depends entirely on what one's vision for America is.

Whatever your vision of America, America's prestige, influence, and credibility took some serious dings today.

This may not seem like it is as big a diseaster as invasion of Iraq, but invasion of Iraq at least demonstrated America was really powerful, and had many options it can pursue to get its way, even if its way was not well thought out. Syria incident today merely showed America isn't that powerful, and when stood up to, now has few real options.
