This is what I call the "lost in translation" defense of the bible. It always boils down to "The word _______ in that passage had two meanings when it was translated, X and Y. While it looks like it means X, it really means Y."
It's just a weasel tactic to get out of admitting that certain passages in the bible are just plain wrong, embarrassing, or horrific.

A while back the local newspaper borrowed a radar gun and sat down near a school zone and clocked the speeds of different vehicles going over the 20 MPH school speed limit, then posted them online on their website. One of the pictures was one of the officers I worked with, in their cruiser.
