I have sought God earnestly too, but have little to show for it. My Christian friend says that my life is clouded in sin and that is why God does not bother with me. I am vexed about this.
Your christian 'friend' is NOT a friend, but a co-judge with their imaginary god. They told you that for the same reason any christian does - to lessen the guilt of their own 'sin', which is actually just every-day, life-happens stuff. Distance yourself from such cruel and violent judges.
