Yes you can, but if you have to do that to make your ideas work then the problem lies with those ideas and not the people you're trying to convince. Words evolve meanings over time, it's true; however that doesn't mean they are arbitrary things that can have any definition you feel like assigning them. That's why we have dictionaries and the ability - generally - to make ourselves understood. If you want to talk science and have your ideas taken seriously, you need to accept the language of science unless you have a bloody good reason not to. You have an issue with the modern scientific definition of the word "theory", take it up with the National Center for Science Education.
But if you want to go down the route of using only the 'original' meanings of commonly-accepted words because they're not as inconvenient for you, then you'd better leave Atheist Forums since an atheist was originally a christian, a person who denied the existence of the Roman gods. In fact, stop using your computer, given that the word originally meant a person who calculated numbers for a living, and start telling everyone you use an electric Difference Engine.
Or we could stop this silly semantic game and actually have a proper grown-up discussion.
One day i asked my doctor........DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS THE MEANING OF CANCER?
He said.........WHAT YOU MEAN?
Look, i know that you know what a cancer is but i just want to know if you know where the word cancer come from and why someone in the past gave that particular name.
He said.........AH, I SEE.........NO, I REALLY DON"T KNOW.
Sure Stimbo as far as you learn what the modern science establish than you shouldn't have any problem, after all who care where the meaning of the words come from as far as you can manage the daily life.
But a big problem may arise.
Take the religions which they are builded on dogmas or false truth.
After so many times that the meaning of the words get changed the original message become a false truth.
The same thing happen in all field of life.
What was a truth yesterday today will end up in the rubbish bin of history.
Not all the changes are good changes.
We need to change to survive but we got to be very careful and make sure the changes come for the good.
The word theory has been vandalized and his original meaning is gone for many.
Not for me however.

1) You say that you know what a theory is and you say that they are facts and evidence.
I already said that not all theory are backed up by facts and evidence.
In fact most theories are just ideas not back up by facts and evidence.
2) I did not answer you because i already explain these points in reply to Stimbo.
3) I do not have always the time to answer all posts.
Sometime enrico goes to sleep like everybody else.
