The arab women were vain... possibly still are and don't wish to damage their skin. Fair enough! I wouldn't call them stupid when they managed to find a way to prevent that damage, while keeping cool. It's actually quite clever and a bit counter-intuitive.

I also note that the arab men do the same. How is this counter-intuitive (other than have the only dye (blue or black) or goat hair that will not accept a dye to make their clothes from) They had no access to cotton.

Counter-intuitive, because , if it's hot, you'd want to remove clothing, not be completely enveloped by layers and layers of fabric... at least, that's what my mediterranean intuition claims...
