In the most fundamentalist religious areas of the world, there would be obvious, radical changes: no more girls with mutilated genitals or girls kept from school; equality for gay people; no more children kept from hospitals by parents who don't "believe" in medicine; no more girls force-married. These are all obviously good things.
The changes would be less earth-shattering for most of us, but I would enjoy a world without the constant battles over creationism in textbooks, and without the constant side-stepping of other people's religious in-your-faceness.
I would hope we wouldn't lose sacred music, though- you can't beat a sung mass for beauty.
I can't see that we'd lose much as a species by getting rid of religion. GodsRevolt, what do you think would be the negative impact on us as a species? Do you think the world would be a better place if we got rid of Islam? Of Mormonism? Of Wicca?
