What are the appropriate reasons for testing god and what is the scriptural justification for them?

Where the Lord says to test Him, in these cases it is God's request, a request to show man God's sincerity. God says to test Him on the tithe, try this one with the sincerity God ask and see if it works. God says not to test Him for selfish reasons.
