Does BDSM Need Its Own Rights Movement?

What hardships do BDSM people really face? What kind of rights are denies to them? What kind of legislation or social activism could really help them, especially in those movements?

Social stigma. Not unlike the closet gay: the closet BDSM practitioner suffers little in the way of social 'hardships'.

Once one's status is known to members of a society, regardless of what said status constitutes, there is the possibility of said (believed) status affecting one's interactions with knowing/suspecting members of said society... which is often coloured by the prevailing beliefs of the (believed) majority.

Tell your parents (or an otherwise applicable figure of authority and/or judgement in your life) that you like to put a collar on your man and that he enjoys nipple clamps... and tell me you (and your man) don't suffer 'hardships' resulting of such.

Tell your employer, and see if you're not fired right quick... bring it up on a job interview, and your chances to get in have become virtually nonexistent.

That 'general sexual rights' of persons are not commonly fought for under title as such does not mean that they shall forever remain 'in the dark'.

Based on what I know now, I don't think educating people on BDSM would be a bad thing at all, but I can't imagine such a movement being as big as the gay rights movement or womens' lib since it doesn't look like the issues coming up aren't going to be as significant as employment discrimniation, housing discrimination, sexual harassment and the right to marry.

None of them currently have significant enough issues (in this country) to devote so much time and energy to 'social rallys' and the like. But twenty years ago, I would not have said this... but the information age is upon us.

Apparently as long as a man beats his wife for sexual reasons it is okay. If a man spanks his wife non sexually because she doesnt keep house clean it is wrong. If he does it because he is horny than it is fine. ATHEIST MORALITY!!!

It can also be a compulsion. When normalized violent trauma disappears on a sudden, humans sometimes seek it out... it can feel 'right', even when it hurts. It can be hard to walk away from what one is used to experiencing.

Also, if one royally fucks up, and they don't know if they can adequately 'punish themselves', said individual may request the application of pain.

What if she only gives permission to him because it makes him feel happy even if she doesnt enjoy it and it make her suicidal.

Then she might be using it as a tool to manipulate him along other lines which she does desire.

If giving permission to make someone feel happy is cause for suicide... then I would very much appreciate I be contacted. Nothing like taking the willing... it's quite like christmas

The only way this could happen is if she was coerced. That isn't safe, sane or consensual.

There are many more ways. Personally... I'll take a little pain to further a worthwhile end. Others might well do it with the intent of shielding another, which is not always threatened by another, but which the one granting themselves in <capacity> might well be cognizant of.

Obviously, this goes a lot deeper than physical violence, and is a manipulation tool constantly under use (take an annoying task or whatever for <reason(s)>).
