Larry,
Actually most of your post didn't really leave me much to come back on - so I will respond entirely to this point.
The plausibility of higher orders of sentient consciousness causes me no problem at all. This, however, doesn't mean they exist. Might be nice to meet them but they appear to be hiding. It doesn't mean they are God, merely more advanced. It doesn't mean they are singular - there may be many - of a single origin or of multiple origins.
The problem, however, is, for me, in the idea that they are in any way interested in us, at a species level let alone at an individual level. Further - if they are, why the cloak and dagger routine? Why do they need us to seek them out rather than appearing in our brains as a matter of routine?
How far does the interest go? Not enough to step in when we lose the plot it seems (on an individual or mass level). They are content to sit back and watch us wage war, suffer natural disasters, battle pandemics and so on, yet, they are interested in us?
Finally I wouldn't put too much store in your cosmological arguments as for every one you have there is an atheist answer. Neither of us know enough to know which is correct so we choose the ones that confirm our opinions, or the ones with the better debater.
I think we can both agree that the latter is no guide to truth - otherwise good lawyers would be no more in demand than bad ones.
