That way I'm not being too blunt but am also not encouraging them to believe in fairy tales.
But you know if they find out you're going to die or leave them in any way they'll cry and get extremely upset. Especially if the thought had just occurred to them. I understand the author not wanting to do that, because you do wonder if there's a point in them getting so upset. But at the same time I don't think heaven is as white a lie as he thinks it is.
