I have no doubt of that. My pre-depression mentality was quite proactive. I remember when I came out of school I went on quite a self-help/philosophy-of-success kick, from Steven Covey to Anthony Robbins. I've had plenty of stressful times and tight spots before but I always fell back on my own outlook that "God gave me reason and an indomitable spirit and the rest is up to me". It always worked well for me before.
I do agree that most of my depression stems from a perception of being chewed up by larger forces that even my best efforts couldn't overcome. A sense of helplessness had set in. My road to recovery has involved finding ways to pick myself up and make the best of my situation.
