One of the excuses given when asked why so many prayers go unanswered is that one must ask for something that is "in accordance with [god's] will" in order to get an answer. In which case, prayer comes down to asking god to do the things he already plans on doing. So yeah, it's pretty useless.

A You can influence a deterministic system as long as you are a part of that deterministic system.
In other words, God already knew you were going to pray to him.
